Biography:

In 1958 when Satyajit Ray was marshalling the musicians for his film Jalsaghar, one of the vocalists he picked for the project to sing the khyal portion of the film was a youthful Salamat Ali Khan. Born in 1934, Salamat Ali Khan (as was his brother Nazakat Ali Khan) was born to the music. He and his brother were something special. Singing for Salamat Ali Khan is not just a profession. As he told me in October 1992, "It is not a matter of singing or not. It is our duty. I was born of a family of music, a musical family. Our duty is to sing. My sons Sharafat Ali, Shafqat Ali, Latafat Ali and Sakawat Ali are the tenth generation. I am the ninth generation." Salamat Ali Khan's stature is unassailable: he remains one of the finest performers of khyal.
